The New Standard in High-Precision, High-Performance Surface Roughness Measurement
Mitutoyo Corporation (Headquarters: Takatsu-ku, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture; President: Toru Nakagawa) is about to introduce to the market the newly developed Surftest SJ-410 series, a line of SJ-series portable surface roughness testers for managing surface roughness on-site, successor to the SJ-401 series, featuring greater precision and performance with the ability to effortlessly switch between skidded and skidless measurement. Sales of SJ-410 series instruments began in Japan on April 23, 2012, and will gradually extend to overseas markets thereafter.
Since launching the current SJ-401 series in 1999, Mitutoyo’s high-precision and multi-functional portable surface roughness testers have earned a reputation for guaranteeing highly precise drive unit straightness, skidless measurement support, and the ability to measure wavy and intricately shaped surfaces outside the laboratory environment. Today’s surface measurement market, however, demands greater measurement and analysis functionality than ever before.
To meet these needs, the SJ-410 series has all the basic features of a portable surface roughness tester, but with better performance. It comes with the same carrying case as the SJ-401 series, and includes a large color LCD touch panel for high visibility, as well as the option to choose from one of 16 display languages. It offers two options for X-axis measuring ranges, 25mm and 50mm, and an array of detector ranges of 800, 80 and 8μm, at resolutions of 0.01, 0.001, and 0.0001μm respectively. Two drive units are available: the SJ-411 has a straightness accuracy of 0.3μm and drive length of 25mm, and the SJ-412 has a straightness accuracy of 0.5μm and a drive length of 50mm. Accessories include a simple and convenient stand for using the device as stationary equipment in a laboratory. Other simple stand options include an auto-set unit, X-axis correction unit, and tilt correction unit, which, working in tandem, enable more efficient measurement. External ports include a USB port, Mitutoyo’s own Digimatic output port, a RS-232C port, and a footswitch port. Power is supplied from one of two available power sources: a built-in Ni-MH rechargeable battery, or an AC adapter. An optional SD memory card can store large amounts of measurement results and condition data. A high-speed, high-quality thermal printer built into the display unit prints approximately 1.5-times faster than the printer for the SJ-401 model, allowing for stress-free printing of graphs and other data. The large color graphic LCD touch panel is 5.7 inches and backlit, dramatically improving readability in dark environments. The Surftest SJ-410 series was developed based on universal design principles, making it easy to use for people of all ages and nationalities.
Key Features
Features a highly legible, 5.7-inch color-graphic LCD screen with backlight for dramatically easier operation. Also displays pass/fail results in color, and renders not only measurement results but also assessment profiles, bearing area curves, and amplitude distribution curves with clarity.
The 5.7-inch color-graphic LCD screen on the display unit allows users to switch between icon- and text-based display settings. The combination of icons and touch-screen navigation makes operation simple and intuitive. A guidance tool provides detailed explanations of touch-panel buttons for enhanced usability.
Internal memory can store up to 10 measurement conditions, making it possible to simultaneously view all measurement conditions specific to each workpiece. An optional SD memory card can store much more, including 500 measurement conditions, 10,000 measurement data items, 500 graphical data items, and 10,000 textual data items, facilitating on-site data collection and documentation. The SD memory card also comes with Trace 10, a function that automatically stores the 10 most recent measurements for easy retrieval.
The drive unit comes with a vertical tilt unit compatible with Digital ADJUSTMENT TABLE (DAT), the device's powerful support tool for leveling the measuring surface during skidless measurement. The amount of tilt correction is displayed as a number, making it easy for anyone to perform work setup by adjusting the dial on the main unit.
Choose from 16 display languages: Japanese, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Czech, Polish, Hungarian, Turkish, Swedish, and Dutch.
Compatible with JIS (JIS B 0601-2001, JIS B 0601-1994, JIS B 0601-1982), VDA, ISO-1997, and ANSI standards, and also supports transverse roughness parameters and special parameters.
Displays calculation results for each sampling length, evaluation profiles, bearing area curves, and amplitude distribution curves in addition to calculation results.
Use a USB connection and dedicated data transfer program* to easily fill an Excel spreadsheet with measurement conditions and results.
*Download the program for free from Mitutoyo’s website (http://www.mitutoyo.co.jp/eng/) after the end of June, 2012 (tentative).
